Welcome to New Worlds

Welcome to New Worlds – an exploration into the rocky planets and moons of the Solar System and beyond.  I’ll be bringing you all the latest news coming from the many space missions and telescopic studies in play today and figuring out just what exactly it all means.

As an Earth Scientist with strong planetary leanings, I’ll be focussing on the geology of these bodies – that which we can see on the surface and that which lies beneath.  I’ll admit to a weakness for Mars (the subject of my undergraduate work) and Mercury (that of my ongoing PhD research), but the moons of the gas giants are also a great source of fascination, as are the fantastic volcanic and tectonic features of Venus and our dawning knowledge of extra-solar planets.

The more we learn, the more we realise that every planet is different, in surprising and wonderful ways.   I’ll be starting by setting out the state of our knowledge about each planetary body in the solar system and answering the question: what makes each one special?
